Anderson Valley is primarily an agricultural community located in Mendocino County, California. The Valley is situated along Highway 128, between the coastal and inland mountain ranges and is made up of the four small, unincorporated communities of Yorkville, Boonville, Philo and Navarro. Residents live among the wooded hillsides, creek sides and mountain ridges surrounding the Valley, which is home to a variety of agricultural industries such as livestock, apple orchards, olive groves, forestry, fresh produce stands, vineyards and wineries. Cottage industries, including small-scale manufacturing and arts and crafts businesses, are some of the diverse occupations of the local populace, though most are involved in the agricultural industry and tourism associated with grape growing and wine. An estimated 43% of the residents of the service area have no form of health care coverage, based on people receiving services at AVHC. 26% of the Anderson Valley residents receive MediCal – the highest percentage in the County. For some residents of the Valley it is a thirty to forty minute drive along dirt roads to connect to the single main artery that brings them to the Health Center in Boonville. Since some essential health services and all specialty health services are located in Ukiah, forty-five minutes from the Valley floor on a winding, mountain road, or in Santa Rosa, an hour and a half drive over the mountains and along a winding, flood-prone road, having basic services available at the Health Center means good care sooner for many people. |
